2026 Summer Workshop

From August 21 through 23, we were honored once again to welcome Professor Kumakura Kiko Sōshō of Fushinan for our 2026 Summer Workshop, held at the Miyako Hybrid Hotel in Torrance.

On the first day, August 21, the Instructor Workshop covered Sumi-shomo, Koicha, and Usucha. On August 22, the Qualified Members Workshop included Shozumi, Daikazari, and Mawaribana. On the final day, August 23, the General Workshop focused on Saza and Usucha.

The practical sessions were conducted using the ro (sunken hearth) setting, which is offered only once every five years. Each day, many members with various levels of qualifications gathered to participate and studied enthusiastically under Sōshō’s detailed and thoughtful instruction. It was truly a meaningful and fulfilling three days for everyone involved.

On the final day, Sōshō also gave a special lecture about the 13th-generation Grand Master, Sokuchūsai. Through valuable photographs and personal stories, we were able to learn about aspects of Sokuchūsai’s life that cannot be found in publications—from his childhood through the journey that eventually led him to succeed as the head of the Omotesenke school.

The lecture was particularly fascinating for the participants, and it was impressive to see everyone listening with such great interest and attention.

With the successful completion of this year’s program, the 2026 Summer Workshop came to a close as a meaningful and well-attended event.

We sincerely hope that even more members will join us next year and that the workshop will continue to grow and provide an even more enriching experience for all.
